September 6-9

In the first days our goals are to get to know the grade 9 students, establish some expectations and share some resources for being successful in transitioning to Foothill!






Tuesday, September 6
SYNOPSIS

FIRE - No travel

CALENDAR NOTE - Special freshdragon event planned for Friday, 9/9

DETAILS
  • Sit together in FIRE zone
  • Put phones away
  • Take attendance
  • Quick connection activity of choice (5-10 minutes) - some ideas below
    • DIRECTIONS: What's Next? - Have the group sit in a circle. The first person starts with any word they wish, but just one, such as “chocolate.” The next person has to add a word that is associated with that word, such as “chip.” This continues quickly, with each person adding just one word. Everyone will end up in laughter!
  • Teacher- and leader-led discussion of time management - video here
    • How can students best use advisory time to support academics?
    • What are some student patterns for "completing or not-" homework?
    • Is time set aside in the evenings to work on academics?
    • How do students handle distractions in school and at home?
    • How can students better manage their time?

  • Use FTHS agendas to begin planning how to spend the advisory this week


Wednesday, September 7

Connect with one another, school work or travel as needed

DETAILS
  • Sit together in FIRE zone
  • Put phones away
  • Take attendance
  • Agendas out and ready to write/share plan for the week
  • Set up for in-room work or sign out for appropriate travel
    • Students should have a written goal for traveling
    • This is a "why I need to travel" statement
  • Leader(s) sit with students and connect/work alongside
    • Once everyone is set, leader should check on travelers

Thursday, September 8
SYNOPSIS

Friday, September 9

SYNOPSIS

FIRE - Freshdragon Friday in Quad

Extended lunch for everyone to enjoy event in Quad for grade 9s

DETAILS
  • Take attendance
  • Invite/escort your freshdragons to the quad near J building for event
  • Teacher may lock door and everyone has an extended lunch

  • Decorating desk tent cards (for names)

  • Monster drawing (trifold, one person draws top, one middle, one bottom)

  • Get out the Legos and let them build and chat
  • Put "freshdragon" on white board and come up with words/character traits for each letter
    • Something similar with student names

  • If you have paper plates, you could do the drawing on the top of the head (similar to baby shower game)
